| 1/14/2009 10:16:00 AM | Email this article Print this article | Savannah Celebrates Lincoln's Bicentennial This year will mark the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, America's sixteenth president. Massie Heritage Center and the Teaching American History grant program (TAH) of the Savannah Chatham County Public School System are celebrating the Lincoln Bicentennial with a variety of events.
Savannah residents and visitors will experience Lincoln up close and personal. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has selected Massie Heritage Center to host a traveling exhibit in celebration of the 16th president's 200th birthday. Massie will be one of only 40 sites across the nation to host the traveling exhibit Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America.
In addition to this traveling exhibit, Massie will host two public Savannah Reads Events that will offer insight into the life of Lincoln through two biographical books presented by their respected authors.
It was on December 22, 1864 that William T. Sherman transmitted his famous telegram to then U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in which he presented "as a Christmas gift, the City of Savannah

Lincoln Exhibit Preview
The public will be invited to preview an exhibit titled "Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America" as a set of traveling learning stations featuring original documents, artifacts, broadsides, prints, photographs, and newspapers that examine Lincoln's life from his beginnings in the crudest of circumstances to his ascension to the Presidency and his assassination. This exhibit will be located at Massie Heritage Center from January 30th - February 20th.
Beginning at 7:00 pm Savannah Reads Event #1
Author Stephen Berry will moderate a discussion of his book "House of Abraham: Lincoln and the Todds, a Family Divided by War" at Massie Heritage Center located at 207 E. Gordon St. A reception will be held following the discussion. This is the first event in the Savannah Reads series. ⨠â¨

Savannah Reads Event #2
Author and journalist Andrew Ferguson will provide a FREE public lecture on his book "Land of Lincoln: Adventures in Abe's America" at St. John's Episcopal Church with a reception to be held at the Green Meldrim House. â¨
