The economic development boom that is accompanying the rapid growth of the Port of Savannah was much in evidence earlier this month. First, Heineken launched its import operations on Feb. 5. Later that same week, on Feb. 7, National Retail Systems cut the ribbon on its new 140,000-square-foot warehouse in Pooler.

The new transload facility, which broke ground on Feb. 12, 2007, will serve as a special project distribution facility providing services such as high-speed container transload, store delivery, marking and labeling and pier drayage.

"Transloading and distribution facilities like the one in Savannah - that are near the port and can offer a variety of high-speed distribution services - are becoming increasingly important to retailers," said Larry Ravinett, senior vice president of logistics and supply chain solutions for NRS, in a prepared statement.

Doug Marchand, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), welcomed NRS to Savannah, saying, "We're looking forward to helping you build your business."

The Port of Savannah already handles major cargo shippers like Wal-Mart, The Home Depot, Target and IKEA. The new NRS covers 50 acres.

Northpoint Industrial, which has already developed distribution, transportation and warehouse space in the area, developed the new industrial park where the facility is located.

"NRS is the nationwide leader in retail logistics. We couldn't ask for a better client to anchor our new development property in Savannah," said Wrenn Blalock, principal manager of Northpoint Industrial.

The new facility, located four miles from the port, is a part of the NRS Gateway Ports Strategy.

"Our Gateway Ports Strategy will extend our national distribution network to every major retail import gateway in the country," said Ravinett. No specific retailers have been named, but Ravinett said, "Savannah is booming. We already have several commitments from national retailers to use the new facility."

The Savannah facility will be able to accommodate a fully capable repair and maintenance shop and 40,000 square feet of special project warehouse space. The 85-foot-wide cross-dock will eliminate the inventory-holding function common in warehouses, allowing shipments to be transferred directly to outgoing trailers. The cross-dock will also have 90 doors on each side.

The city of Pooler, where the facility is located, participated in the ceremonial opening.
