June 29, 2012 - Ray Whitfield, age 75, of Vidalia, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. He was a native of Reidsville and lived there until moving to Toombs County in 1960. He previously was employed with the Georgia Department of Corrections in Reidsville, Robin Builders as a foreman, Chickasha, and Hagan Construction Company. Mr. Whitfield served in the Army National Guard, was Baptist by faith and was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hilton and Thelma Tootle Whitfield; a grandson, Brandon Whitfield; and two sisters, Leitha Johnson and Ann Williams.
Whitfield is survived by his wife, Janice Martin Whitfield of Vidalia; two daughters, Julie C. Miller and husband Reggie of Guyton and Brenda Stephens and husband Kim of Lyons; three sons, Johnny Whitfield and wife Eileen of Lyons, David Whitfield and wife Dorothy of Guyton and Lee Whitfield and wife Carol of Richmond Hill; one brother, Randall "Sug" Whitfield and wife Josephine of Reidsville; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, June 29 at 2 p.m. in the Galbreath Cemetery with Rev. Wayne DeFore and Rev. Tom Carruth officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday morning from 10-12 noon.
