July 3, 2012 - City of Savannah crews responded to a sewage spill in the 1800 block of Mitchell Street on Monday, July 2.

An unknown blockage in a sanitary sewer gravity main caused overflow into storm main. An estimated 340 gallons of sewage was discharged. This amount classifies as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The sewer main blockage was cleared and main was jetted and cleaned. By-pass pumps were set up at ditch to collect and pump contaminated storm water to City Sanitary Sewer Collection System.

All agencies and entities (Heath Department and City Public Information office who notifies local media) were contacted per the requirement of the EPD and sampling has done to determine extent of spills into City Waters. The sewer Public notification of all such spills is required by state law.
