Savannah Ccelebrates National Opera Week Oct. 26-29
VOICExperience partners with Telfair Museums and the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus to celebrate the national event

Oct. 3, 2012 - VOICExperience (VOICE) returns to Savannah with great singing and great American music in celebration of National Opera Week, which focuses this year on American opera. To celebrate the 2012 theme, VOICE brings its founder and world renowned American baritone, Sherrill Milnes and the world's most famous living American operatic composer, Carlisle Floyd to the events.

FLOYD ON FLOYD: A Composer's Symposium, presented in partnership with the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus and Telfair Museum, Friday, Oct. 26, 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. Jepson Center Neises Auditorium, Telfair Museum
Can you imagine spending an evening talking with Puccini about Madame Butterfly? Working directly with composers in opera is a rare and wonderful experience! In this free event, National Opera Week kicks off with legendary composer and NEA Opera Honors Awardee Carlisle Floyd in discussion and FLOYD ON FLOYD: a composer's symposium presentation of his most famous compositions, including one of the most famous American operas in the repertoire today, Susannah. Hosted by Maria Zouves, Floyd will share rare insights, answer questions and give a sneak peek into the concert that follows during the week. Learn how Floyd's music really

Celebrate National Opera Week in Savannah with an exciting concert of American music, from opera to Broadway, featuring the music of composer Carlisle Floyd. The evening will include scenes from Floyd's masterworks Susanna, Of Mice and Men and Wuthering Heights, directed by the composer. The Telfair Academy Rotunda is the perfect backdrop to this compelling evening, all sung by national rising stars of opera in English. Join host Sherrill Milnes and the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus for American opera scenes and great moments from musical theater and popular song. Tickets are available in advance and at the door.
A Young Artist Master Class with Sherrill Milnes presented in partnership with the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus and Telfair Museums with young artists from the Voice Co-op, Oct. 29, 2012, 5:30 p.m., Telfair Academy Rotunda, Telfair MuseumAcclaimed by the press as one of the greatest operatic voices of our time, Grammy Award®-winning American baritone Sherrill Milnes' international career spans more than four decades. Now the opera legend passes on his vast musical knowledge and nurturing educational tools to local voice students at the Telfair Academy Rotunda.
Chosen by the Voice Co-op, an organization of area voice teachers, six students will participate in a free Master Class where they will showcase their talents and gain insigh from the seasoned opera singer. The audiences enjoys watching the process as Milnes works with each singer individually as he inspires them to continue their education for the future of opera. This event is free and open to the public.
Georgia's new opera program, VOICE, will be presenting festivities which are sponsored in part by the Telfair Museums and the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus. Events include a lecture, master class and a concert of great American opera, musical theatre and song. Operatic selections will focus on the great Carlisle Floyd, directed and introduced by the 86-year-old composer himself, who will be in Savannah for the first time.
These three diverse and significant events will have global recognition and focus
through Opera America as the nation celebrates opera across the continent.
"After two successful programs in Savannah this year, it is appropriate and exciting that VOICE returns to celebrate this important American initiative, with the country's leading composer." said VOICE's executive director, Maria Zouves. "We are thrilled to be in partnership with strong artistic forces such as Telfair Museums and the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus."
The VOICE artistic team will include Milnes as the conductor and host, Floyd and Zouves as stage directors and pianist/conductor Dan Gettinger at the piano, who has worked not just in opera, but in musical theatre as well.
VOICExperience artists and Savannah Philharmonic 2012-13 season soloists Cooper Nolan, Keith Harris and Savannah's own Rebecca Flaherty will be joining other rising stars of the VOICExperience programs. A group of area voice teachers, called the Voice Co-op, will also partner with the consortium for the master class event.
Zouves continued, "We've put a weekend of events in beautiful venues that together both entertain and challenge our fervent music-loving audiences here in the Savannah area. And through these events, we continue to support our mission of developing vocal talent."
Tickets for Saturday's events will be $35 general admission, $20 for Savannah Friends of Music and Telfair Museum Members and $10 for Students with ID and available at the door. Seating is limited.
